Wednesday, February 18

Today was another sea day. We enjoyed a room service breakfast, and saw the islands north of Sicily approach from our starboard balcony view. The largest is called Stromboli, and is a massive active volcano. The captain made an announcement saying that sometimes “sparks” are visible at night, but this morning the cone was quiet.

We navigated the narrow strait between Italy’s toe and Sicily, which was great fun to watch. Little cities by the shore, sharply rising mountains, and lots of ferries shuttling across the water.

Sicily is way bigger than I expected, and the upper elevations were snow-capped. We caught sight of Mt. Etna, too, the view of which transitioned from snow into clouds. Pretty!

I spent some time working on my German homework, but then it was time for bingo. I loves me some cruise ship bingo. Also, there’s a Second City troupe on board, and I caught an hour of skits this evening, where I sat with 2 nice ladies I met at lunch. Turns out I’m good at making small-talk with 60-ish chicks.

Tonight the seas are “moderate,” which means the waves are now 4 to 7.5 feet in height, with little splashy whitecaps, and we can feel some motion. But it’s not as rough as when my niece Taylor and I sailed the strait between the Florida Keys and Cuba, and I think we’ve been pretty lucky so far.

Right now Mark is watching Bundesliga football, and I’m bummed by how little of the German commentary I can understand. Better do some more homework tomorrow.
